Pediatric thoracic injuries-experience in a tertiary care centre

Background: Isolated thoracic injury in children is not rare. Common modes of are blunt injury. As the chest wall more compliant and thickness subcutaneous muscular layers reduced, trauma causes increased level energy transmission leading to chances internal organ injuries whereas penetrating directly cause fatal those vital organs causing significant mortality. In this study we sharing our experience managing isolated a tertiary care centre with an encouraging outcome. Methods: This prospective was conducted department pediatric surgery NRS medical college hospital, Kolkata during January 2019 December 2021. Results: Total no cases 83 (Boys 50, girls 33). 64 were treated conservatively 19 required surgical intervention. 40% patients between 2-6 years. Among (82%), (12%) other mode (6%) have been noted which includes diaphragmatic rupture (2), bilateral hemothorax unilateral (10), pneumothorax (4), flail rib clavicle (20), emphysema tracheal (1), esophageal (1) retained foreign body (3). 7 ventilatory support. Conclusions: Management done mostly by conservative management few require intercostal drain placement. Thoracotomy rarely. Postoperative ventillatory support also important factor for such patients.
